Challenge:
Novel Green Solvents for CO2 Capture

Introduction

Sustainable solvents are a topic of growing interest in both the research community and the chemical industry due to a growing awareness of the impact of solvents on pollution, energy usage, and contributions to air quality and climate change. Solvent losses represent a major portion of organic pollution, and solvent removal represents a large proportion of process energy consumption. Besides being sustainable those solvents must be potentially more tolerant to impurities which allows the treating of low content flue gases. The challenge is addressing start-ups which develop innovative and sustainable solvents and respective carbon capture processes/technologies to capture carbon dioxide.

Problem

  • Carbon capture using amine scrubbing is an effective way to reduce CO2 emissions. However, they use environmentally harmful compounds such as nitrosamines, a class of carcinogenic compounds, form from nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the process.
