Challenge:
Breakthrough CAPEX Improvements in H2 Production and Storage

Introduction

Power cost can be decreased if hydrogen plants are operated only at times when cheap green electricity is available and excess hydrogen production is stored for constant base load supply. But this increases the required CAPEX as bigger electrolysers and storage capacity is needed, and overall the advantage of low power prices is not translated into low Hydrogen production cost. The challenge is to propose technology improvements in hydrogen production equipment and/or storage leading to breakthrough CAPEX reductions in order to take advantage of low power prices without exploding CAPEX when over dimensioning.

Problem

  • Industrial H2 users will require base load green H2 supply to replace grey H2, natural gas or other raw materials in their processes (steel, refineries, ceramic...)
  • Base load green H2 supply by means of water electrolysis is inherently expensive, mainly driven by high cost of renewable power for base load supply
  • Green H2 is still not competitive for industrial use against current options and heavy subsidies are required for its implementation
